Ministry rebuts resumption date for schools, universities

FEDERAL Ministry of Education has discredited the reports peddling in the social media with a memo claiming that Federal Government has approved 20th June, 2020 for resumption date for all universities, polytechnics and other schools.

The made-up report claimed to have been signed by the Hon Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu quoted the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Mustapha Boss to have given the approval.

In a reaction, the ministry enjoined the public to disregard the information as it lacks credibility with no iota of truth in it. The ministry emphatically stated that the resumption date is not yet confirmed.

“Kindly disregard all unconfirmed news not originating from the Ministry’s Official Media Handles. The Official date for Resumption of Schools Nationwide is yet to be confirmed”, the ministry stated.

Earlier, the Minister of State for Education, Hon Emeka Nwajiuba had addressed the rumours and said that until the safety of children is guaranteed, federal government will not take the risk. However, the minister added that the government is working out guidelines for the safe re-opening of the schools, but with no date confirmed at the moment.

“Until we can guarantee the safety of children from Covid-19 pandemic, our schools cannot resume. We will provide guidelines for the safe re-opening of schools”, Nwajiuba said.
