PENGASSAN threat: Wike submits, drop charges against 22 ExxonMobil staff

RIVERS State governor, Nyesom Wike has bowed to pressures from Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, and ordered immediate release of 21 offshore workers who have been in detention for violating the lockdown order by the state government.

The state governor had refused to release them despite interventions from the federal government stating that he doesn’t take orders from anywhere but from the Rivers people that elected him in office. The incident had created serious rift between the Rivers government and federal government which ended up subjecting the victims to paying the price as the grass that suffers where two elephants fight.

Suddenly, after threats by PENGASSIN, Gov. Wike on Sunday reversed his decision and released the detainees, and assured that all charges them have been dropped.

In a statement by Gov Wike’s Special Assistant (Electronic Media), Simeon Nwakaudu, the Rivers State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Zaccheus Adangor said that the detainees were released following interventions by well-meaning Nigerians.

Adangor however noted that Rivers government remains resolute on implementing her measures to check the spread of coronavirus in the state.
