LASG sets up Panel, Trust-fund for victims of Police brutality

LAGOS State Government has set up a Trust Fund to look into cases of Police brutality in the state and also to compensate victims accordingly.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on Tuesday after his meeting with the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu in Abuja.

He said that a panel will be inaugurated immediately to look into cases of police brutality and excesses which will comprise of eminent citizens.

“I come back from Abuja with news that I believe will lead to concrete steps to ‘EndPoliceBrutality”.

“I met with the IGP. Starting from this week, a panel will be setup comprising of citizens to look at all cases of abuse by the police around the country.

“SARS officials have immediately been asked to leave the streets around the country following their disbandment and return to police headquarters for debriefing and psychological examination.

“A deep look at their activities will commence. The work will be exhaustive so prepare to submit your queries within the parameters they will share.

“In Lagos, we have immediately set up a trust fund that will be managed by nominated members of the public and CSOs to compensate families that have lost loved ones to police brutality”, he said.

He specifically assured that Mr. Okechukwu Ilo’s spouse will be compensated over loss of husband and breadwinner of the family in the hands of Police.

“People like the wife of Mr Okechukwu Ilo who died in tragic circumstances will not be left out”, the governor added.
