Why my government created SARS, IBB explains

FORMER Nigeria’s Military President, Gen Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida has reacted over the excesses of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS which was created by his military junta.

IBB as fondly called said through his social media handle that the unit has continuously deviated in its core duty of securing the citizens of the country to oppressing them.

He therefore supported the federal government to reform the unit for productivity and purposefulness.

“I urge the Presidency and the Police Chiefs to have an urgent reform on police brutality on the ongoing ‘EndSARS’ campaign.

“My administration created the Special Anti-Robbery Squad to protect the citizens from crimes and robbery, not harassing the citizens on a daily”, Babangida stated.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) founded in 1992 was a unit in Nigerian Police Force under the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Anthony Ogbizi.

It was disbanded on October 11, 2020 following a widespread protest from Nigerians home and abroad. SARS was under controversy for being linked to acts of extortion, torture, framing and blackmail thus leading to the protest that resulted in it being dissolved.
