Release arrested IPOB members immediately, group asks govt

A human rights organization, Transparency Watch (TW) has berated federal government for the detention of twenty-two members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) following a clash between the group and Nigerian security operatives in Enugu yesterday.

In a statement signed by the group’s spokesperson, Ambassador David C Ani, and made available to newsmen, Transparency Watch, an Enugu based sociopolitical group condemned the attack on the group, describing it as ‘an unwarranted attack innocent and harmless youths’.

Ambassador Ani further argued that the group have freedom of association as citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and therefore urged the government to release the 22 members arrested by the DSS immediately and unconditionally.

The TW Spokesperson then urged President Muhammadu Buhari to look into the issues of IPOB in the country with his high security experience to avoid creating another security issue in the Southern part of Nigeria, which will not go well for the country at this critical time.

Ani also tasked the Governor of Enugu State, Dr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to make sure peace is restored in the state to make Enugu more conducive for the residents.
