Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
NIGERIA’s former Minister of Finance and former World Bank’s boss, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is putting finishing touches in her campaign to grab the topmost position in the World Trade Organisation, WTO.
By her enviable profile alongside President Muhammadu Buhari’s endorsement and campaign for her, the former Supervising Minister of the Economy during Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s administration is highly favoured and likely to emerge the winner, all things being equal.

Though, President Buhari has backed Okonjo-Iweala for the job and went ahead to set up a lobby group for the top Nigerian economist. However, Okonjo-Iwealla will be facing other hot contenders with profound profiles too.
Amongst them, Kenyan woman, Ms Amina C. Mohamed emerges first major contender to Okonjo- Iweala’s WTO top job interest.
Amina Mohamed, 58, a minister and former WTO chair said she is hopeful of Washington’s backing for the position.
Other factors that may play out include international political intrigues by the western world to allow an African to step into the big shoe.
The winner of the election would replace Brazil’s Roberto Azevedo, the current Director General of the organisation.
The eight candidates are:
Dr Jesús Seade Kuri (Mexico)
Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (Nigeria)
Mr Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh (Egypt)
Mr Tudor Ulianovschi (Moldova)
Ms Yoo Myung-hee (Republic of Korea)
